Steel framing kits for owner-builders
If you hold an owner-builder permit, a labelled steel framing kit made from your approved plans can simplify the frame stage. Here's what you need to know before you order.

Owner-builder permits
In Queensland, the QBCC requires an owner-builder permit to undertake or supervise building work valued at more than $11,000 including GST (up to $27,500 for farm buildings), and one applicant must complete an owner-builder course or obtain an exemption.
In NSW, an owner-builder permit is needed for work over $10,000, and above $20,000 you also need approved training. Rules change, so confirm the current requirements with the QBCC or NSW Government before you start.
Why a kit suits owner-builders
A kit arrives as labelled wall panels and trusses with layout drawings that show where each one goes. That turns the frame stage into assembly rather than fabrication, which is easier to plan with a hired framing crew.
What we supply and what we don't
BWG supplies framing kit-only: design, engineering documentation, manufacture and delivery. You arrange installation, the building certifier, inspections and the rest of the build.

Common questions
Do I need an owner-builder permit to buy a steel frame kit?
The permit relates to the building work, not the purchase. In Queensland you need one for work valued at more than $11,000 including GST; in NSW for work over $10,000. Check the current rules with the QBCC or NSW Government.
Can I install the frame myself?
Owner-builders can carry out work under their permit, but frame installation needs to follow the layouts and engineering, and it will be inspected. Many owner-builders hire an experienced framing crew for this stage.
