Owner-builder's guide to steel frame kits in Queensland and NSW
Ready to quote · 6 min read · Published
Short answer
In Queensland, the QBCC requires an owner-builder permit for work valued at more than $11,000 including GST (farm buildings up to $27,500), and one applicant must complete a course or get an exemption. In NSW, a permit is needed for work over $10,000 and approved training above $20,000. A kit-only steel frame gives you labelled panels and trusses with layouts; you still organise the certifier, installation and the rest of the build.

Permits
| State | Permit needed for | Training |
|---|---|---|

| New South Wales | Work valued over $10,000 | Approved units of competency above $20,000 |

Use approved or near-final plans. The closer the plans are to final, the fewer changes, and the fewer re-checks before manufacture.
